Just a comment: Repairing permissions is by far the most often recommended troubleshooting step in these forums, and by far the least likely to be correct.
If that reveals a defect in your RAM, then you'll have to remove or replace the affected RAM stick. (If you don't feel comfortable with doing this, you should enlist the Start over and try this: sudo cp -R /home/gilles/files "/media/My Book" Or better yet, try this for only the problem directories.
